back---Astronomy Table of Contents

In the following pages we are going to look at the Universe and some of the wonders contained therein. Some of the things that I am going to mention, you will be able to see with your naked eye. Other sights and wonders you will just have to be content to read about.

The subject of Astronomy leads us into areas that are marvelous to behold and challenging to ponder about. However, they also lead us into the worlds of ideology and philosophy which causes a great deal of friction between many on the scientific and religious sides. I am not going to join in the debate on these pages.

I do believe that God is the Creator of all that exists. The belief that all of this just happened, because certain conditions existed, is just plain illogical to me and denies a great deal of the evidence I see and understand. I would like to discuss this subject at great lengths, but that is for another time and place.

I will be stating what the scientists say, but that does not mean that I believe everything that they say. Scientists have to continually change some of their ideas, as new discoveries are made.

I was on a tour at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and one of the staff members was showing us some demonstrations. She mentioned, that when the astronauts brought back rocks from the moon, they had to throw out everything that they thought they knew and start over.

I doubt if they had to throw out everything, but I am sure they did have to make many changes. This is just a small example of changes that are being made, as new discoveries are made.

The totality of the science community is not in lock step on all of the issues concerning this awesome Universe that we are a part of. However, no matter what they believe, they can not answer all the questions concerning the existence of this Universe. They must move forward with FAITH just as a Christian must. No one has all the answers, that is, no one except the Supreme Creator God and the Logos through whom all things were created.

Religious beliefs have made some major blunders. In the early centuries, after the crucifixion of Christ, religious teachers were saying that the sun revolved around the earth. Later, scientists proved that the earth revolved around the sun. Religious leaders believed the world was flat, which was proven to be wrong also.

On these pages I will give you most of the information from the scientific point of view. I will leave it up to the reader to come to their own conclusions, but I may make a few comments where appropriate.

I will be using certain lengths of time, not because I can prove them, or disprove them. I will be using them because they seem to be the most acceptable at this time. For instance, I will be using the figure of 15 billion years, as the age of the Universe.

We will begin by taking a look at some of the constellations. As we journey through the constellations I will also get into other bits of information. Therefore, be prepared for more than just pictures of constellations. With all of this said, let's begin our journey.
